This is one more step for the 2025 budget of the City of Geneva, proposed by administrative councilor Alfonso Gomez. Although there is a deficit of 72.9 million francs, the amended draft budget was accepted by the Finance Committee, by eight votes to seven, on Wednesday evening. Unsurprisingly, the PLR, the MCG, the UDC, as well as The Center refused it.

No notable change is to be reported compared to the budget proposal submitted by the City’s chief financier. The 108.7 new positions requested by the Executive were maintained, despite tenacious opposition from the right. The latter has also multiplied the amendments (the record for requests for modifications goes to the UDC), but none has ultimately been accepted. There is no doubt that they will be defended again in plenary. However, the left-wing majority leaves little doubt about the outcome of the final vote on the budget by the entire Municipal Council on December 7.

Three amendments tabled by the left and by the Center were accepted and concern different subsidies from associations or bodies. Amounts which are however compensated in the draft budget.

The City’s deficit, announced in September in 63.4 million francswas dug by 9.5 million francss at the beginning of November, after new cantonal tax projections.

As a reminder, the draft budget includes the reduction in personal income tax on which the Geneva electorate must vote on November 24. If this cantonal tax cut is refused, the deficit forecast by the City will reach 19.3 million francs.
