Thick black smoke and impressive fire in Perpignan: what is happening?

A major fire is underway in Perpignan. This Tuesday, June 18, 2024, shortly before 8 p.m., thick black smoke was reported in the Porte d’Espagne area. It is the old Comteroux store which is engulfed in flames.

60 firefighters mobilized

The origin of the disaster affecting this large 10,000m building²decommissioned for several years, is currently unknown.

An important device, composed ofaround sixty firefighters, has just been deployed to the scene. Avenue d’Espagne was blocked in both directions of traffic by the police. Smoke seized the Porte d’Espagne sector, where the burning smell is omnipresent.

At 10 p.m., the fire was brought under control, but treatment of hot zones and clearing operations should continue for a good part of the evening and night. The extent of the damage is still unknown. For now, no casualties is not to be deplored.

At the same time, the Pyrénées-Orientales firefighters were also mobilized between Canet-en-Roussillon and Sainte-Marie-la-Mer, where one hectare of vegetation was ravaged, near a campsite.
