9-year-old Argentine rider dies after terrible accident, motorcycle world in mourning

Considered a great hope for motorcycling in Argentina, Lorenzo Somaschini died this Monday at only 9 years old following an accident during the first free practice session of the Junior Cup on the Interlagos circuit at the weekend last.

The motorcycle world is in mourning. Lorenzo Somashini, young Argentinian rider, died Monday evening following an accident that occurred Friday during the first free practice session of the Junior Cup, counting for the 4th stage of the Brazilian Superbike championship, in Interlagos, venue of the GP Formula 1. A race reserved for drivers between 8 and 16 years old. Due to excessive speed, the child ended up sliding before suffering a significant impact to the head.

“As soon as he fell at the exit of Pinheirinho (very tight left hairpin), the driver was immediately treated on site by the medical team in an intensive care ambulance. He was then transported to the racecourse emergency room, where his clinical condition has stabilized,” the organization said in a statement.

He dreamed of being world champion

“He was on the second lap when he crashed in the slowest corner of the circuit. It was a combination of many things. He suffered a highside. The crash was very slow, but he hit his head in a position that today pushes him to fight for his life,” explained his manager Diego Pierluigi to Argentine radio LA100 just after the accident, quoted by Motorsport.

Victim of a violent blow to the head, the young boy remained in very serious condition before dying three days later in intensive care. Lorenzo Somashini would have turned 10 on July 17, but he already had a long career on two wheels. At just three years old, he received a minimoto from his father. Not long ago, the young rider even declared that his dream was “to arrive in MotoGP and become world champion”.

Pilots in the premier motorcycle category have also reacted to the tragic news. Eight-time world champion, Marc Marquez sent his condolences, sending “hugs” to his entire family. “My heart breaks because I was also his idol and he had my number. Unfortunately, motorcycles can give us everything, but they can also take everything from us at any time,” Jorge Lorenzo wrote on Instagram.
