Jordan Bardella on women’s rights: these nuances that the RN fails to specify

Endometriosis, breast cancer, IVG… In a video published on “I will be the Prime Minister who will unwaveringly guarantee every girl and every woman in France their rights and freedoms,” assures the president of the National Rally. We verified his claims.

  • “We fought for better care for women with endometriosis”

The National Rally did initiate a bill aimed at improving the care of women with endometriosis in October 2023. The text was, however, described as “opportunistic” by Nupes as by the majority deputies. Partially supported by Les Républicains, it was finally withdrawn by the RN. The associations had also expressed their doubts about the proposed law.

This included the creation of a long-term condition status (ALD30) for women suffering from endometriosis, a measure already voted unanimously by the National Assembly in January 2022 even if it had not been followed facts (it is up to the government to establish the list of diseases benefiting from ALD30).

“The text as it is written only includes the exemption of costs, particularly related to medicines, but it does not take into account transport or the elimination of the second day of waiting after the first stop,” also deplored Priscilla Saracco , general director of the Endomind association with “Ouest-France”.

  • “We voted […] full coverage by health insurance of care related to the treatment of breast cancer »

The RN in fact voted for the entire bill aimed at full coverage of care linked to the treatment of breast cancer by health insurance. The text, however, excludes fee overruns. A downside due to an amendment tabled by Renaissance… but also voted for by Marine Le Pen’s deputies, notes “Libération”.

  • “Marine Le Pen supported the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution”

If Marine Le Pen voted for the inclusion of the right to abortion in the Constitution, her vote does not reflect that of all RN deputies. The far-right party is in fact the one to have voted the least for the text at the Versailles Congress. 11 deputies voted against and 20 abstained.

  • “We fought for an increase in emergency accommodation places for women victims of violence”

The RN group voted unanimously in favor of an amendment from Sandrine Rousseau in January 2023 creating a multi-year funding law against violence against women which takes into account in particular accommodation systems. The group also voted for the entire bill creating universal emergency assistance for victims of domestic violence. The RN, however, did not table any amendments during the examination of this bill.

On several occasions in the European Parliament, Marine Le Pen’s party also abstained on texts concerning violence against women. In its program for the legislative elections, revealed Monday June 17 by “Le Parisien”, the RN does not develop any measures aimed at combating violence against women.

  • “We will lead a relentless fight against the insecurity which is reducing the freedom of every woman in France to move in the streets”

At the end of the video, Jordan Bardella links gender-based and sexual violence to insecurity and current migration policy. A theme that has been present for several years at the National Rally. However, three-quarters of victims of sexual violence know their attacker at the time of the incident, and half of them personally (ex-spouse, friend, etc.), according to the 2019 “Living environment and security” survey report.

  • “Our deputies also voted for an amendment aimed at strengthening the fight against sexual mutilation practices”

The RN tabled an amendment aimed at putting sexual mutilation “at the heart of the fight against sexual violence in France”. This was adopted by the National Assembly in November 2022.

“These sexual mutilations are largely imported from countries where they are practiced by tradition,” explained the party in its amendment, making the link between immigration and sexual violence. Other sexual violence does not seem to interest Jordan Bardella’s party as much. In the European Parliament, RN MEPs have repeatedly voted against resolutions on sexual harassment.
