The broadcast of this recording, supposed to remain confidential, caused enormous concern, explains Paris Match. The listeners immediately came up with several theories as to
an emergency situation aboard the ISS, fearing for the safety of the astronauts. The mention of a “slim chance of survival” particularly fueled rumors of a decompression, a serious incident which could endanger the lives of the crew.

To calm the situation, NASA quickly published a press release on the ISS’s X account. “This audio was inadvertently misrouted from an ongoing simulation where crew members and ground crews are practicing various scenarios in space and is not related to an actual emergency“, she said. The agency also confirmed that all members of the ISS were safe and sound at the time of the broadcast.

Emergency training for astronauts

Astronauts are regularly trained in various emergency situations, including decompressions, also called “bends“. This phenomenon, well known to scuba divers, results from the formation of bubbles inside the body due to a change in external pressure. In space, astronauts follow strict protocols to remove nitrogen from their bodies and avoid these dangerous situations.

The audio incident took place while the crew members were sleeping, in preparation for a spacewalk scheduled for the next day at 1 p.m. (French time). According to NASA,
this outing had to take place in optimal conditionscompletely unrelated to the simulated exercise that was accidentally broadcast.

“We understand the confusion and concern caused by this error”

The broadcast of the recording quickly made the rounds on social networks, causing an avalanche of comments and speculation. Many internet users expressed their concern, with some even going so far as to suggest that NASA was hiding the true nature of the incident. The situation required rapid and clear communication from the agency to avoid a crisis of confidence.

We understand the confusion and concern caused by this error“, indicated a spokesperson for the
NASA
. “The safety of our astronauts is our top priority, and we are taking steps to prevent this from happening again.
