The George Sand and Black Valley Museum explores the image of the novelist, confronted with modern themes through a new pocket exhibition entitled George Sand, feminist? The exhibition questions the received idea according to which the writer is considered a great figure of feminism. He is offering a study day entitled “George Sand and feminism”, Saturday June 22, 2024, at the Maurice-Sand room with: Michelle Perrot (historian, professor emeritus of contemporary history at Paris-Diderot University), Martine Reid (biographer, professor emeritus of literature at the University of Lille), Florence Rochefort (historian specializing in the history of feminisms, research fellow at the CNRS), Carole Rivière (doctoral student in history, University of Limoges), Gaëlle Rio ( Director of the Museum of Romantic Life, Paris), Julie Verlaine (co-president of the association for a museum of feminisms), the HF collective, the Georgette Sand collective, Séverine Vidal (author of George Sand, girl of the century).

At 10:10 a.m., “George Sand, an extraordinary model of emancipation in the 19e century”, by Michelle Perrot; “The “birth” of George Sand, a quest for independence through the profession of writing in a masculine environment”, by Martine Reid. At 11:15 a.m., “Romantic heroines”, by Gaëlle Rio; “George Sand’s heroines, vehicles of emancipation? » by Martine Reid. At 2 p.m., “George Sand and the women’s rights activists of his time”, by Carole Rivière; “The perception of the image of George Sand by feminists since the 19e century”, by Florence Rochefort. At 3:15 p.m., “The evolution of George Sand through commemorations: the making of the image”, by Vanessa Weinling; “The image of George Sand reinterpreted by feminists today”, by Séverine Vidal. At 4:45 p.m., Julie Verlaine will present the project for a Feminism Museum in Angers followed by the project for a new museum in La Châtre by Vanessa Weinling. Closing of the interventions and at 6 p.m., visit to the museum and the exhibition “George Sand, feminist? »
