JAKARTA – Taiwan insists that it does not want to fight with Beijing. Taipei’s policy is to develop multi-layered defensive and preemptive defense capabilities to make it more difficult for China to take the island.
Taiwanese Defense Minister Wellington Pra said his country faced increased military and political pressure from Beijing to accept sovereignty claims rejected by the government in Taipei.
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Sunday (June 16) that China views the annexation and eradication of Taiwan as a major national target, and told Taiwanese military cadets not to give in to its losing position “the first fight was the last fight.
When asked by reporters in parliament how long Taiwan could survive without US support if there was a Chinese attack, Masing said it was not central to their strategy.
“Our strategy, our hypothesis, is asymmetric warfare to build multi-domain prevention, and in the process it weakens China’s ability to carry out an invasion,” he said.
As part of ongoing military reform, Taiwan has promoted the idea of ”asymmetric warfare”, in order to make its troops, much smaller than China’s, more dynamic and harder to attack, for example with missiles and drones installed in vehicles.
