Since his entry into play at the end of the match against Switzerland (1-3) on Saturday in Cologne for Group A of Euro 2024, Hungarian international striker Martin Adam has been the target of Internet users who make fun of his overweight through, in particular, numerous memes. Taunts which did not particularly make the person concerned laugh.
“Facing the goalkeeper, he hesitates between flat of the foot and flat of the day…” These are the type of jokes that we can read on social networks since the entry into play of Martin Adam, center forward of Hungary, facing to Switzerland (3-1) Saturday in Cologne. The image quickly went around the world. That of a player with an imposing physique. Very imposing. If his height is nothing exceptional (1.91m), his silhouette is unique.
The one who counts plays very far from his country, in South Korea, in Ulsan, displays an indisputable overweight. His weight is not mentioned by the Hungarian Federation but the figure of 95kg is circulating. And the truth is probably that he’s a few pounds heavier. Add to this excess weight a beard which gives him a rather uncomfortable look and it doesn’t take much for the networks to catch fire. Total rubbish, as usual.
“I was born like this…”
Sneaks but also memes… Nothing escaped the attention of the main party. “I’ve seen a few of them. Usually it makes me laugh,” he said at a press conference on Sunday, visibly touched by this mockery. “I was born like this, it’s my body type. I can’t change, I can’t change genetics. That’s all I can say.” And added, mentally tough: “If I score the winning goal against Germany (Wednesday at 6 p.m.), it won’t be because I saw these memes and they irritated me.”

And Martin Adam is capable of scoring goals despite being overweight. Before scoring 24 in 67 matches in South Korea, he finished top scorer in the Hungarian championship at the end of the 2021-2022 season with 31 goals in 32 appearances and the distinction of having scored against all teams from Nemzeti Bajnoksag, the name of the Hungarian league.
