In what is intended to be the fastest 5 km event so far this year on New Brunswick soil, the top three finishers all broke the 17-minute barrier on Sunday in the annual Father’s Day Run with the Fredericton Reds.

Michael Colford, a regular on the podiums, even set the second fastest time this year in 16min03. Only Matt McNeil managed a faster 5 km, he who had clocked 15min46 in April in Quispamsis.

Colford, who is originally from Fredericton, is accompanied on the podium by Ian Young (16min44), also from the provincial capital, and Ontario’s Sadisq Shahid (16min44).

Three other men managed to run under 20 minutes, namely Brad McMullin (17min08), from Fredericton, Tom Hayes (17min47), from Oromocto, and Dieppe Shaun Girouard (19min05).

In the women’s race, Marjo Mooers of Fredericton triumphed in 19:44, eight seconds better than Ontario’s Margaret Atkinson (19:52).
