“Sad, very serious”, the strong words of Marcus Thuram on the political situation in France

The son of Lilian Thuram, known for his commitments against the extreme right, clearly had messages to convey. If his teammates had simply called in recent days for mobilization to vote, he is the first player to position himself against the rise of the National Rally and its ideas, breaking the neutrality that prevailed until then. Excerpts.

The JDD. What is your view on the current political situation in France?

Marcus Thuram. It’s sad, it’s very serious. We learned it after our match against Canada. This is the sad reality of our society today, and the result of certain television shows that promote these ideas. Telling everyone to go vote is a civic act, but it is not enough, we must fight on a daily basis so that the RN does not pass. In the French team, I hope everyone shares my opinion. It is not enough to say that we must go and vote. We also need to explain how we got there and get out of this situation.

Do you think you are an example for young people and do you have a responsibility?

It’s not very complicated for me to express myself on this, it comes from my personality and my education. As an example, there are lots of people who follow me on the networks, I have to pass on certain messages.

Do you talk about it with your father Lilian?

My father doesn’t encourage me to do anything except be a well-behaved boy. But growing up with him, having conversations with him, I feel responsible for keeping those kinds of messages.

In the French team, I hope everyone shares my opinion

You say that you hope that everyone shares your opinion in the France team. Do you have any doubts about this? Do you plan to take collective initiatives in this direction?

I have no doubt that the people on the France team share my vision on things. We are in a free country, where everyone must do what they think is right. I stand before you and I say certain things, others may think them and not say them, I respect everyone’s will, but I have no doubt. It’s up to everyone to feel how they want to handle this situation, I’m not here to force people. Some are more modest, I am here because thanks to my father I have enough control over this situation to be able to talk about it.

What TV shows do you think of when you talk about the desire to raise the RN?

I don’t want to cite any particular show, but when I’m in Italy and I turn on the TV, I see certain debates and I think it’s meant to bring about the rise of the RN.
