A new petition calls for an end to sales of fish used as live bait for recreational fishing. After the Decathlon of Nantes-Atlantis and Nantes-Vertou, it is the turn of that of Saint-Nazaire to be targeted by this complaint initiated by a citizen of the naval city. “Using a vertebrate animal as bait, piercing its mouth and back to catch other fish, is no longer acceptable”, denounces the author of the petition, who wished to remain anonymous. This Wednesday, June 25, the request had collected a little more than 12,000 signatures.

A popular practice

In an online tutorial, the sports brand recognizes that live fishing is controversial, but that it remains very popular in France, due to its effectiveness and ease of application. Contacted, management has been hammering out the same response for months, ensuring that it is engaged in the “distribution of increasingly qualitative lures which will gradually replace live bait”. A transition that, according to her, cannot be “immediate”.

Since 2019, the animal association PAZ has been campaigning for the end of live fishing, banned in several European countries. Activists criticize Matthias Tavel, the former LFI deputy of the 8e constituency of Loire-Atlantique, for refusing to sign the bill tabled on November 7, 2023 aimed at banning this ancestral technique.
