The second ordinary session of the Board of Directors of the World Food Program (WFP) opened its work on Monday in Rome, under the chairmanship of the Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the UN agencies in Rome, Mr. Youssef Balla .

This session marks an important step at the global level in the fight against food insecurity and for the promotion of resilient and sustainable food systems, indicated Mr. Balla, in a statement to MAP.

Morocco, as coordinator of African countries, continues to deploy its efforts to highlight African priorities at the international level, assured the diplomat, indicating that this session will be notably marked by the adoption and examination strategic plans of several countries, in particular the strategic plan for Senegal (2025–2029), as well as evaluation reports of initiatives carried out in Mali and Rwanda.

The adoption of these documents, continued Mr. Balla, illustrates Africa’s commitment to adapted and sustainable solutions to the challenges of food security.

During this session, which continues until November 21, important discussions are planned on themes such as resilience, climate change and WFP policies on school meals.

The objective is to learn from past initiatives to align the future strategies of this Agency with regional needs and global priorities, particularly in Gaza, Sudan, the Sahel, East Africa and Haiti.

Under the Moroccan presidency, the WFP Council will approve the report of the working group responsible for examining the governance of this UN Agency, noted the ambassador, noting that this review constitutes the most important process carried out during the last two decades by WFP.

Morocco played an active role within this working group, having developed the said report on the examination of all the recommendations made by the independent consultant on WFP governance, published in May 2023, he said. he added.

The Moroccan presidency will reaffirm, during this session, its determination to defend African interests and strengthen its commitment to inclusive and sustainable solutions to the challenges of food security, not only for Africa but also throughout the world. , assured Mr. Balla.

She will also reiterate the importance of strengthening good governance of the WFP, and the need to adopt decisions in an inclusive and transparent manner, with a view to ensuring better coherence between the recommendations made in the report and the institutional ambitions of the WFP. , the diplomat insisted.

The WFP Executive Board holds two regular sessions and one annual session each year to discuss strategic documents and approve policies, programs and budgets related to WFP’s activities globally.
