One person died and three others were injured, two of them seriously, during an ultra-trail which had to be canceled in Haute-Savoie, we learned from reliable sources. Downpours fell on the region during the night from Friday to Saturday.

The accident left “one dead and three injured, two of whom were seriously but not life-threatening,” said Bonneville public prosecutor Karline Bouisset. A man born in 1972 died on the spot of cardio-respiratory arrest, she said.

“Emergency services were called between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. (Saturday) by the organizers” to take care of the victims, the Haute-Savoie prefecture had indicated earlier, confirming information from the regional daily Le Dauphiné Libéré. Other people were treated for hypothermia, according to this source.

Significant rainfall

The prefecture mentioned the difficult conditions of support by the PGHM (High Mountain gendarmerie platoon) and the Sdis (departmental fire and rescue service) due to the sector, located at altitude, and the difficult weather conditions.

“We had significant rainfall between 2:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. combined with low temperatures,” she stressed. The organizers announced the shutdown of the Haut Giffre ultra-trail on Facebook.

A judicial investigation was opened for “search for the causes of death and endangering the lives of others”, entrusted to the Bonneville research brigade and the PGHM, according to the prosecutor.

Trail running is a sport of running, over a long distance, in a natural environment on a materialized route made up in particular of paths or trails. We speak of an ultra-trail when the distance to be covered is greater than a marathon (42.195 km).
