INSEE has just published the results of a somewhat special study. Especially since it reveals to us the deadliest day of the week. Zoom !
This is the deadliest day in France according to INSEE!
According to a new INSEE study, 639,300 people lost their lives in France last year. The number of deaths is down -5% compared to 2022, the deadliest year. There were in fact 35,900 fewer people dead.
Remember that the year 2022 was marked by five waves of COVID-19. To this are added two episodes of flu in April and December as well as heatwave periods in July and August 2022. Fortunately, no flu peak was observed in 2023 in France.
Still according to INSEE, January 3 turns out to be the deadliest day in the last twenty years (from 2004 to 2023). On average, 1,900 deaths are recorded each year on this date in France. Note that August 15 remains the least deadly day. This is particularly the case for the elderly, whose number of deaths is significantly low in summer.
What about public holidays and weekends?
January 3 therefore corresponds to the deadliest day of the year in France, from 2004 to 2023. Over this period, there have been 1600 deaths, or +19%. It is a winter day, just after the end of year holidays.
In fact, this peak can be explained in particular by the desire to spend these holidays with loved ones. Waiting for a new year could also postpone the day of death for the elderly. In France, this period is synonymous with resumption of scheduled surgical operations.
However, deaths are less frequent on public holidays. August 15the deaths are less than 2% of the deaths which occurred on average during the 3 preceding and following days. Due to the winter season, although the number of deaths is more than 10% higher than the average number per day, the undermortality stands at -2% compared to the days adjacent to Christmas Day.
Still according to this study, Sunday turns out to be the least deadly day of the week with 1,550 deaths, or -5%.. Then comes Saturday with 1,580 deaths, or -1%. But there is an excess mortality of +1% on Tuesdaywith 1600 deaths on average.
The winter months are deadlier in France!
Between 2004 and 2023, the winter months are the deadliesti.e. an excess mortality rate of +9% in December, +14% in January, +12% in February and +6% in March. This particularly concerns people aged 60 or over.
Despite an undermortality of -14% in June, July and August for those aged 90 or overINSEE observes excess mortality in January (+12%) and February (+18%). The good news is that the summer period proves less deadly for the elderly In France.
