Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon subsidiary dedicated to remote computing (cloud computing), will devote an additional $230 million to financing start-ups specializing in generative artificial intelligence (AI).

AWS will select some 80 young companies “that use generative AI to solve complex challenges”, said the group in a press release published on Thursday June 13, 2024. It mentions financial services, health, media and climate change.

These companies will not receive money but credits that will allow them to use AWS architecture, which includes data centers and servers capable of handling the complex calculations necessary for the development of generative AI.

In addition to these credits, worth up to $1 million per start-up, AWS will provide them with training and monitoring to improve their use of AI and machine learning.

Generative AI involves assembling massive amounts of data that makes it possible for an interface to imitate a human and engage with the user who speaks or writes in everyday language.

Machine learning gives software the ability to learn and improve on its own, without human intervention.

Last year AWS had already chosen 21 start-ups for the first edition of its financing program for young generative AI companies.

Tech giants have been in a frantic race for generative AI since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022.

They are investing hundreds of billions of dollars in developing their own language models, the programs on which generative AI interfaces are built.

They are also increasing their data management capabilities to offer them to their customers interested in this new technology, who often do not have the means to make the same investments.

They also support young companies to strengthen their influence in this sector.
