Inflation is no longer falling, it is even starting to rise slightly in France. The price increase stood at 2.3% in May, up 0.1 point compared to April, according to a press release published by INSEE this Friday.

This slight increase in inflation results from a further acceleration over one year in energy prices » and food prices, while the prices of services are slowing down, specifies the institute.

The harmonized consumer price index (HICP, which is used for European comparisons) increased by 2.6% year-on-year in May, after 2.4% in April.

The battle “has been won” for Bruno Le Maire

At the end of May, the Minister of the Economy estimated that “ the battle has been won » against the rise in prices in France. “ I also announced that we would be around 2% inflation at the start of 2024, we are at the end of May 2024, and we are around 2% inflation, so the bet was won », he declared on CNEWS-Europe 1.

This slight resumption of price increases comes as the European Central Bank (ECB) made its first cut of 0.25 percentage points in its key rates on Thursday June 6, after having raised its rates dazzlingly between 2022 and 2023, then having maintained them between 4% and 4.75% since September – at the highest since the creation of the euro.
