On Thursday, May 9, around 1:15 a.m., Léa Deheul, 19, from Orchies and Tristan Descarpentries, 23, from Marchiennes, lost their lives in a terrible car accident in front of the Zoo Club. They were maneuvering in their car in front of the dance hall when they were violently hit by a drunk driver who was driving an Audi at high speed.

Facts which obviously deeply affected the relatives and friends of the two young people.

It was at the initiative of colleagues from the Action store in Orchies, where Léa had been continuing her training for around ten months, that a convoy was organized this Sunday from this locality in the North of France in order to join the places where the tragedy took place.

The objective of this operation was also to continue to publicize the case so that justice can move forward on this matter. Léa’s family and colleagues were joined by Tristan’s family and loved ones, including his dad Michaël. Tristan, whom his friends affectionately nicknamed in Ch’ti “Y Biroule” (for “he zone”).

With around seventy vehicles, the convoy left Orchies around 2 p.m. to arrive around half an hour later in the nightclub parking lot.

A sign of destiny

In front of a crowd made up of many young people, Tristan’s dad gave a poignant speech. With comments tinged with anger when it came to discussing the fate that Justice should reserve for the perpetrator who was drunk at the time of the accident and who was driving at excessive speed. If we are to believe the victims’ relatives, this driver would currently be free while awaiting his trial which should probably not take place for several months. There was also talk of anger when Tristan’s dad mentioned the lack of facilities intended to ensure safety at the entrance and exit to the campsite on the National Road.

“There are shops and a funeral home a little further away and we have installed speed bumps in front of them. Nothing here. The only solution offered to us would be to close the nightclub. But this is not a solution, where will our children go to have fun? Tristan and Léa were two serious young people, who only wanted to have a good time, not to be killed…” he said between sobs.

The rally ended with a gigantic balloon release while participants chanted the following slogan: “Justice for Léa and Tristan!”.

Some saw this phenomenon as a sign of destiny but, carried back by a contrary wind, the balloons returned massively above the dance hall after crossing the Nationale.
