Since the end of Covid, Natagora has organized welcome days to attract new volunteers. Although Covid has greatly increased the demand for volunteering within Natagora, there is still a shortage of manpower on the ground. For the first time, this type of meeting took place in our province, in Bertrix. Around twenty citizens came from the four corners of the province and even from Brussels.

“This year, we are organizing 2 welcome days in the province of Luxembourg. We are seriously lacking in arms in the province of Luxembourg, which is why we are organizing it in Bertrix. The lack of volunteers in this region is explained by: a population less dense and therefore fewer people in general, more abundant nature: people feel less need to defend it, for the Semois Ardennaise region in particular (Vresse-Bouillon-Bertrix-Herbeumont): a greater number of residences secondary”, explains Nancy Debey.

The welcome days begin with an icebreaker to get to know each other while getting straight to the heart of the matter. Then, we explain what it means to be a volunteer at Natagora: everyone invests the time they want, we are covered by insurance, it is the group which decides on the projects it wishes to implement. Then the different local groups introduce themselves, as well as the activities they carry out (management of nature reserves, awareness in schools, training, walks on flowers and birds, activism, studies on bats, etc.) .

“We have 2,203 members in the province of Luxembourg, but not all members are volunteers, far from it. Members support the movement financially, while volunteers devote their time,” explains Nancy Debey.

Just about everyone at Bertrix said they were interested in becoming volunteers. Everyone was able to register for the group(s) in which they wish to participate and they will be invited to the next meeting/activity. The next welcome day will take place in Gaume, at the Fratin sheepfold, on September 7, 2024 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Info and registrations: [email protected]
