The outgoing deputy Paul Vannier (Lfi, New Popular Front) appears on paper as the big favorite of these legislative elections in the 5e constituency of Val-d’Oise (Argenteuil – Bezons).
Argenteuil and Bezons in fact voted for La France Insoumise on June 9 during the last European elections.
Manon Aubry’s list in fact collected more than 43% in Argenteuil and almost 41% in Bezons.
Add to this the score of the PS-Place publique and the environmentalists (around 9% and 4%) and we already arrive at the absolute majority.
However, one may wonder whether all these left-wing voters will find themselves in the New Popular Front, particularly the environmentalists, who expressed their regret at a 100% LFI ticket (Paul Vannier and Nadia Aouchiche), while proposals had come from the PS (Nessrine Menhaouara, mayor of Bezons) and the environmentalists for the replacement.
“I salute and thank the voters, especially the youngest, I saw many of them, who came out to vote,” greeted Paul Vannier on the evening of the European elections.
Paul Vannier was elected in 2022 with 63.71% of the vote against the outgoing LREM MP Fiona Lazaar.
Fiona Lazaar gives up
In a context that was unfavourable to the representatives of the majority (the Renaissance list won 8.7% in Argenteuil and 8.4% in Bezons), Fiona Lazaar did not wish to return there.
On social media, the former MP explained that it was after “careful consideration” that she decided not to run in the legislative elections. “The presidential party has decided to invest Fatima Lilyaje (Editor’s note: we were unable to reach him), historic local activist to whom I wish a great campaign. For my part, I prefer to go and help friends whose constituencies could swing to the RN,” underlines Fiona Lazaar.
Paul Vannier also takes “a worried look” in relation to the “historic score of the extreme right” while welcoming the “exceptional result” of his party in his constituency, being particularly satisfied with having been able to mobilize young voters.
Pas d’alliance LR-RN
On the far right, the National Rally has invested in Quentin Hoarau (remains unreachable despite several attempts). The RN presents him as a commercial flight crew (steward). The Fn, then the Rn, has always been absent from municipal debates, except for the period when Micheline Bruna was elected to Argenteuil. The Fn has never succeeded electorally in Argenteuil: 11.67% in the 2022 legislative elections.
But in the European elections, he achieved an astonishing score: almost 18% in Argenteuil and almost 20% in Bezons, second in both cities, proof of the roots of this movement in the so-called popular cities.
The Republicans, although at the head of the commune for ten years, only managed to attract 3.9% of the votes in Argenteuil.
For this election, they have invested a deputy mayor who is well established locally, Boualem Meziane, delegate to the fairground markets, who presents himself as
“a man of the field. Unlike the main candidates, I live, I reside, I work and exercise responsibilities in the very heart of our territory.”
Supported by the municipal majority, he represents, he says,
“a republican and social right. I am delighted that through our candidacy, the people of Argenteuil and Bezonnais can have a real alternative to the extremes that would lead the country to chaos.”
The Republicans in Argenteuil rejected Eric Ciotti’s agreement and made no concessions to the RN.
In 2022, for the LR, Gilles Savry had made 9.77%.
On the far left, the spokesperson for Lutte Ouvrière in Val-d’Oise, Dominique Mariette, a retired teacher, will once again be a candidate, to represent “the workers’ camp”.
The candidates
Paul Vannier (New Popular Front, Lfi, outgoing deputy); Fatima Liliyaje (Renaissance); Dominique Mariette (Workers’ struggle), Thès Baleur (Miscellaneous); Boualem Meziane (The Republicans); Quentin Hoarau (National Rally); Jean-Baptiste Poiaghi (Npa); Dominique Lesueur (Ecologists); Gilbert Pham (Udi).
