Finistère firefighters call on volunteers to strengthen the ranks “during the day”

The Finistère firefighters need additional volunteers with availability during the day. This is the message given by Marguerite Lamour, president of the departmental fire and rescue service (Sdis), Thursday June 6, 2024, during the change of command at the Aven fire and rescue center.

With 2,200 volunteer firefighters and 500 professionals, the situation is not alarming: “To operate, we need 400 firefighters night and day, as well as on weekends. In the event of maximum demand during the day, we still have some uncertainties about the available staff. »

At issue: the inverted schedules linked to volunteering which lead to concentrated availability at night, once the work is finished: “Ideally, therefore, we need volunteers who work nights, in order to be available during the day. »

This call concerns exceptional episodes and echoes the fires in the Monts d’Arrée, in July 2022. This can also be linked to multiple accidents or heavy pollution.

Businesses can help

The departmental representative also wishes to mobilize businesses: “We have made agreements with employers. » They make it possible, in cooperation with Sdis, to organize volunteers’ schedules and obtain absence authorizations.

People wishing to volunteer must contact the head of the center closest to their home, who will inform them of the exercise arrangements.
