What is Ten Ten, this French application which worries about its impact on the private lives of adolescents?

On TikTok in recent days, young people have filmed themselves sleeping, disturbed by the voice of a friend suddenly coming from their phone. Other videos, made by high school students, show them being given an hour of detention by their teacher for having disrupted the class by the sound of a dictated message, even though they were not using their phone. The cause: Ten Ten.

This application, launched on Android App a month ago, is already in first place in the social networks category of application stores. It is even ahead of the famous WhatsApp or Messenger.

The simple idea of its two French creators appealed: transforming our phones into walkie-talkies, through an application on which our contacts can speak to us through voice messages sent and dictated instantly, without having to unlock their phone or open the phone. application. Behind the logo of an arrow on a red background, a good idea to encourage spontaneity, or the official end of free will?

An unpredictable walkie-talkie

The practice of snapshotting, which has largely invaded and influenced our lives, through the applications Bereal, Instagram, Snapchat, has reached a new milestone with Ten Ten. “ Sing, shout or whisper, your friends will hear you in real time », on the application stores, Ten Ten warns with a message which clearly announces its color: no private life. On Ten Ten, to register, a simple connection via TikTok, Google or email is enough, without the need to give a minimum age. And no matter the distance from your friends also registered on the application: they can send you an audio message that the application will then immediately recite through the speaker of your phone.

Like a real walkie-talkie, Ten Ten wants to encourage exchanges in turns, through smartphones. Today rather confined to professional use (military, tracker in ski resorts, etc.), the walkie-talkie marketed in 1940, had revolutionized communication within a certain kilometer radius: press a button to speak, and release to stop broadcasting. The Ten-Ten application is based on this same principle.

With one difference, it requires, during installation, to run in the background of your smartphone. So, even if you have closed Ten Ten, an audio message can still come out of your phone, it is not possible to change the frequency. The only solution to escape unpredictable audio messages from your contacts: put your phone on silent, or turn it off.

No more “ghosting” and consent

Unlike “normal” telephone messaging, the “answer” option does not exist on Ten Ten. Only two messages can be displayed “ X is talking ” Or “ finished “. It is impossible to practice “ghosting”, that is to say, to act like a ghost, run away from a conversation or ignore a call that you do not want to answer. On Ten Ten, no free will, no consent: we do not choose, on the contrary we undergo communication.

Camille Chaize, spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas, accused the application on her X account of increasing “the risk of online harassment and intrusion into private life ». She advised to “turn off notifications at night and in quiet places like school”and of “ limit contacts allowed to send voice messages ».

Another point that worries the government: the transmissions and the confidentiality policy, currently being finalized by the application. Ten Ten in fact has access to the contacts, IP address or location of users, “ so much information that can leak, and can subsequently be cross-checked”, warns Camille Chaize. If the creators assure that “ all conversations are fleeting “, and “ no one can listen to them », the modern walkie-talkie model questions the use and security of our smartphones.

Before leaving, one last thing…

Unlike 90% of French media today, Humanity does not depend on large groups or billionaires. It means that :

  • we bring you unbiased, uncompromising information. But also that
  • we do not have not the financial means that other media benefit from.

Independent and quality information has a cost. Pay it.
