The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on World Environment Day:

“Today, on World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting our environment and our planet, for the sake of future generations.

“Climate change, pollution and loss of biodiversity affect us all in alarming ways. It is our collective duty to protect, restore and preserve the environment for our children and grandchildren. From battling unprecedented wildfires to ensuring clean air and fresh water, we remain committed to doing what is necessary to protect our planet.

“We are taking action to conserve 30% of our lands and oceans by 2030. We have put a price on pollution, particularly targeting the biggest polluters, and we are putting money back into the wallets of Canadians through the Canadian Carbon Rebate. However, we still have much to do. As part of Budget 2024, we are moving forward with investment tax credits that encourage the growth of clean energy industries, including a new investment tax credit in the electric vehicle supply chain. With this credit, we are guaranteeing good jobs for our workers and placing Canada at the forefront of the transition to clean energy. We’re doing this in partnership with Indigenous peoples, including investments totaling $800 million in conservation initiatives they lead.

“To protect our planet, it is not enough to have clean air and clean water today. It is also a question of fairness. We must ensure that we leave the same Canada that we know and love to future generations so that they too can enjoy our country’s beautiful landscapes, clean air and healthy ecosystems. At the same time, we must create opportunities by growing our clean economy.

“On this World Environment Day, I invite all Canadians to think about the fact that even the smallest actions – reducing, reusing, recycling or taking public transportation, for example – can help protect the environment. environment. Together, we can restore the environment to a cleaner, safer place for everyone. »
