United States: Joe Biden toughens his tone on immigration

Taken by surprise by the floods of illegal migrants crossing the Mexican border, lost in the polls, the Democratic president is trying to tighten the screw, in the hope of reassuring a centrist electorate that he needs so badly in the face of Donald Trump to ensure his re-election in five months.

Ttoo little, too late? Little information filters from the White House, but Joe Biden’s campaign team seems to have understood the essence of the message: abysmal polls, growing popularity of Donald Trump after his criminal conviction in New York, erroneous perception of voters on the supposed poor state of the American economy (while growth and full employment are there, to make all of Western Europe jealous). This record unpopularity would be linked to the impressive flows of illegal immigration to the southern border of the United States. The Democratic president signed an executive decree on Tuesday authorizing him to temporarily close the Mexican border when the number of infiltrations reaches the ceiling of 2,500 per day (over seven days). The Biden Administration thus gives itself the power to regulate the incessant flow of asylum seekers, which has become an electoral burden and likely to cost the Democratic camp victory on November 5.
