A fire ravaged part of the Gonaïves municipal market, on the night of Monday June 3 to Tuesday June 4, 2024. Until now, the causes of this incident remain unknown.
The City of Independence woke up this Tuesday to an unfortunate incident. This is a fire that occurred at the main market of this commune in the Artibonite department. According to available information, the fire spread to several cargo compartments very late at night.
In videos that have gone viral on social networks, we can see part of the municipal market under the flames. For the moment, the causes of the fire remain unknown and the losses recorded remain undetermined.
Questioned by the press after the incident, Me Kesler Pierre-Charles, general director of the town hall of this town, asked the judicial authorities to open an investigation in order to determine the cause of the fire. He announced that the town hall, in collaboration with its supervisory ministry, would take the necessary measures for the reconstruction of the ravaged part of the market. He also mentioned the establishment of a register to identify affected traders awaiting assistance.
Remember that since the reconstruction of the market in 2011, after the devastating fire of 2009, this is the third time that the municipal market of the city of Independence has been affected by a disaster.
