The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) on Tuesday called for the use of modern technology to limit the impacts of climate change and invest in scientific research to develop strategies and practices smart and sustainable, thus strengthening the resilience of ecosystems.

In a press release released on the occasion of the celebration of World Environment Day, under the theme “Our lands. Our future. We are the #RestorationGeneration”, ICESCO advocates for the integration of the capacities of young people by helping them find innovative solutions to the environmental challenges the world faces.

This World Day, which this year marks the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, is an opportunity to raise awareness of the need to strengthen means and mechanisms for environmental protection and to promote efforts aimed at preserving and rationalizing natural resources, adds the same Source.

Faced with the threat of desertification to food security and social peace, ICESCO highlights the importance of mobilizing the efforts of the international community to preserve the environment and biodiversity, especially since 40% of arable land in the world suffers from degradation, and that approximately 12 million hectares of soil are lost each year due to coastal erosion, deforestation and mining, thus requiring action to combat desertification through alternative and sustainable agricultural models, given that 70% of the world’s water reserves are used to meet agricultural needs.

In this context, ICESCO works to consolidate the culture of intelligent and sustainable agriculture and to support its Member States in the development of reforestation initiatives and the use of innovative technologies in the protection of the environment and the fight against desertification, in particular by developing programs for the production and cultivation of seedlings in several countries, and by organizing training to strengthen the capacities of young people in the countries of the Islamic world in the field of circular, green and blue economies.

It is also about promoting entrepreneurship in these areas, organizing training sessions to raise awareness about the rational use of natural resources and the rehabilitation of degraded lands, in order to contribute to sustainable development for future generations. , we conclude.
