Gas exploitation between Senegal and Mauritania: the GTA project reaches an important milestone

XALIMANEWS: (Sud Quotidien) This is one more step taken by the natural gas exploitation project located off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal.

Indeed, the Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit, a key component of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1 LNG development, has arrived at its final location, off the border maritime between Mauritania and Senegal.

The information was delivered this Tuesday by British Petroleum (BP), through a press release, which notes that the FPSO vessel is being moored 40 km from the coast, at a water depth of 120 km and it will be operated by BP on behalf of the project partners, namely Kosmos Energy, Petrosen, SMH and BP. The project will produce gas from reservoirs located in deep water, approximately 120 km from the coast, using a subsea system.

“BP is investing in the energy system of today and tomorrow and GTA Phase 1 represents that investment in action. This is a major milestone for phase 1 of the GTA project, an innovative LNG development project that paves the way for the exploitation of the gas resources of Mauritania and Senegal. FPSO ship traveled halfway around the globe and arrived safely [et son installation] is a testament to the resilience, skills, teamwork and considerable effort of all partners involved. We are now fully focused on the safe completion of the project, while working towards the start of gas production,” said Dave Campbell, senior vice-president of BP for Mauritania and Senegal.

Note that phase 1 of the GTA project is expected to produce approximately 2.3 million tonnes of LNG per year, for more than 20 years. “This is the first gas development in this new basin off the Senegalese-Mauritanian coast, with wells located at water depths of up to 2,850 m, phase 1 of the project,” recalls- we in this document received by Seneweb.

The FPSO will accommodate up to 140 people in normal operation. It is expected to process more than 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, according to the same Source.
