why prices are likely to soar in 2025

Following a report from Brussels, regulatory emissions will be doubled for plug-in hybrid cars from 2025. This therefore means that the increase in this taxation could cause the price of these models to explode next year.

  • Regulatory emissions will be doubled for plug-in hybrids in Europe from 2025
  • Then possibly tripled in 2027
  • If taxation increases, the price of these plug-in hybrid cars could explode in the process

For some drivers, the best compromise between electric and gasoline is none other than the plug-in hybrid car. Except that these vehicles are in the sights of Brussels which wishes increase their taxes, considered too light at present. End of game for these models? Several elements are put forward by the European Union which published a report on this subject.

Plug-in hybrids are more polluting than expected

The electric range of plug-in hybrid cars only allows you to travel a few kilometers before using the thermal engine. Pollution is then emitted and many drivers do not use electric charging when the battery is discharged. The reasons given are waiting at terminals or lack of installation at home. That these models are taxed less is a problem according to the European Union when we know that gasoline is favored by motorists.

In addition to lower taxation, plug-in hybrid cars have advantageous approval with no ecological penalty for certain models that are nevertheless greedy. Especially since when the battery is discharged, it adds additional weight, fuel consumption is therefore higher than an equivalent model.

The European Commission then analyzed thousands of cars to measure their consumption. The report indicates that CO2 emissions are, on average, 3.5 times higher “higher than laboratory values”. The reason ? The drivers would not play the game, as explained previously, and these vehicles would be very little electrically driven.

Towards an increase in the selling price of plug-in hybrids?

THE Echoes explain that in 2025, regulatory emissions will be doubled for these models and then possibly tripled in three years. Next year, the exemption from the annual tax on CO2 emissions from these plug-in hybrid cars will also be removed. Vehicles will suffer an ecological penalty, for the most part, in 2027. Actual electric driving will be taken into account.

The increase in taxation for plug-in hybrid cars could therefore lead to an increase in the selling price for consumers. The end of an era of these models prized for the in-between space they offer drivers?
