This is not surprising, and the numbers show it. The used car market is more dynamic in Luxembourg than the new car trade.

And this despite the fact that the prices of used cars have increased significantly. Nearly 59,000 used cars were registered last year in Luxembourg. That is 10,000 more than for new cars.

But both markets reflect the same public taste; The VW brand has a strong nose, at least when it comes to announcements.

Behind in the used car rankings are other German manufacturers such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Which are ahead of Skoda, Porsche and Ford.

Used car prices have not only remained stable, but they have increased over the years. So the average price of a used vehicle was 26,000 euros in 2020. Currently, the average price is 38,000 euros in Luxembourg.

Strong demand and high prices for new electric cars explain this increase.

At the same time, the mileage of the used cars offered is decreasing. Currently, the average is 51,000 kilometers. Just two years ago, it was 65,000 km.

Hybrid and electric cars make up only a very small part of the second-hand market: 57,000 petrol and diesel cars were offered for sale last year. While there were only 6,000 electric or hybrid cars.

These figures are revealed by the ACL in collaboration with the Luxauto site, while the AutoOccasiounsFestival – the used car market – started on Monday and will last until June 15 inclusive in Luxembourg.
