According to the latest data from SOPFEU, fire risks are currently very high in the region. We are talking in particular about high danger for Lac-Saint-Jean and “almost” extreme danger for Saguenay.

“It will increase over the coming days,” warned Josée Poitras of SOPFEU, implying that preventive measures, such as a ban on open fires, could possibly be put in place this week.

Moreover, the region has received very little rain in recent weeks and months, which leaves little hope for the coming days. We would expect disparate amounts of rain in different parts of the region, reports Jimmy Desbiens of Météo Chicoutimi.

SOPFEU therefore monitors fire risks on a daily basis. “Currently, it’s from minute to minute,” said Ms. Poitras. “We want to limit the damage. This is why from year to year, we expect the worst.”

One year after the evacuation of Chibougamau residents affected by forest fires, the City of Roberval says it is ready for any eventuality.

“It was very intense,” recalled Serge Bergeron, mayor of Roberval. “People need to be able to prepare well for climate change because it is something that will eventually happen again. We have forest fires every year.”
