An altar of the dead, photos of cemeteries in Mexico, Barbies made up as skeletons, works of art from the early 20th centurye to today… The media library of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez (Vendée) is hosting an exhibition on the Day of the Dead or “El Dia de Muertos”, a Mexican tradition which mixes the pagan cults of the natives before the arrival of the Spaniards and Catholic culture.

The Day of the Dead is a day of celebration during which we remember loved ones who have left us, indicates Sarah Ibanes, from the association Comal which set up the exhibition. We celebrate in cemeteries with music, meals, it’s a celebration of memories, family unity and life.

“Show the origins”

Now the festival is known all over the world with the colorful skulls, skeletons, comments Fernando Gonzales, of the Comal association. There’s a lot of marketing so it’s important to be able to show its origins.

In addition to the exhibition, the media library offers a series of activities on the same theme during the All Saints’ Day holidays. Including an escape game, creative workshops, an aperitif-quiz evening, a lottery, a screening and debate around the cartoon Cocoa festive afternoon, etc. The theme will close on Saturday, November 30 with an artisanal market around Mexican culture and a culinary workshop.

The program can be found on the media library website. Everything is free but by reservation on 02 51 59 94 55.
