Météo- has placed 13 departments on orange vigilance for the day of this Thursday, October 17, 2024, compared to 5 this Wednesday. The weather station announces an “intense Cévennes episode” in the south of France with heavy rainfall.

Météo-France announces an intense Cévennes episode. Heavy stormy rain is expected in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, the Massif-Central and the Alpes-Maritimes.

In the south of , brief but violent thunderstorms are forecast in the afternoon. Heavy flooding is possible on several Cévennes rivers.

Troubled weather

The weather will therefore be turbulent in the south of the country with an orange alert for rain-floods, violent storms or floods extended to 13 departments. More precisely, five departments are affected by orange vigilance for the risk of violent storms in the 6 a.m. bulletin from Météo-France: Aude, Hérault, Lozère, and Alpes-Maritimes.

Thirteen departments concerned

Thirteen are affected by an orange rain-flood vigilance: , Haute-Loire, Corrèze, Lot, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Tarn, Aveyron, Lozère, Ardèche, Gard and Alpes-Maritimes. Aveyron, Lozère, Ardèche and Gard are affected by an orange flood alert.

At 5 a.m., this Thursday, October 17, 2024, on the relief of the Cévennes and Vivarais, the accumulations reached 200 to 300 mm since the start of the episode, up to occasionally 350/400 mm in the Lozerian Cévennes and 450 /500 mm on the Ardèche mountain: 391 mm at Villefort (48), 509 mm at Mayres (07), 468 mm at Loubaresse (07) and 235 mm at Mont Aigoual (30). In the foothills, accumulations do not exceed 20 to 40 mm, specifies Météo-France.

“Very disturbed situation”

In the Alpes-Maritimes, all establishments welcoming young people, from nurseries to high schools, will remain closed this Thursday, the prefect announced, according to BFM.

In Gard, school transport is canceled in the northern half of the territory. In Lozère, school transport is suspended in the south-east of the department, underlines the continuous news channel.

Meteorologists from Météo-France highlight a “very disturbed situation with uncertainties about the location of the strongest storms and the heaviest precipitation”.
