An accidental fire Tuesday at an oil refinery in Iran killed at least one person, state media reported.

The fire broke out in a refinery located nearly 800 kilometers southwest of Tehran, in the oil-rich province of Khuzestan, bordering Iraq.

“This accident has so far left one dead and four injured,” according to a provisional report released by the official Irna news agency, citing the governor of the city of Shushtar, Mohsen Mousavi.

“A collision between a tanker truck and oil tanks” was the cause of the incident which will be the subject of a thorough investigation, added this official.

The Irna agency subsequently indicated that “non-compliance with safety measures during refueling” was the cause of the fire.

Images broadcast by state media show gigantic flames ravaging the site at night, from which thick black smoke rises.
