Dramatic outing from a climbing club Saturday October 12, 2024 afternoon in Annot, in the east of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. A woman died after falling 30 meters, around 4:30 p.m., at the Annotain climbing site.
“A mountaineer, who was climbing a wall, fell on a person who was below and dragged them into the void“, explains Antoine Pesme, public prosecutor in Digne-les-Bains. The latter is dead, the first climber is injured.
Firefighters, a team from Samu 04, personnel from the Jausiers high mountain gendarmerie platoon, aboard the Choucas 04 helicopter and soldiers from the community of gendarmerie brigades from Annot went to the site. In vain.
An open investigation
“The setting is accidental, we have witnesses since the accident occurred as part of a supervised outing from a club, continues the prosecutor. An investigation is opened for ‘manslaughter’ in order to find out the circumstances and ensure that safety rules were respected“.
The enormous sandstone blocks of Annot are famous for climbing.
