On Friday, the most important Nobel Prize, that of peace, was awarded to the Japanese non-governmental organization (NGO) Nihon Hidankyo. Created in 1956, it brings together survivors of the nuclear bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Also known as Hibakusha, the organization is honored for its efforts towards a world without nuclear weapons, the Nobel committee announced in Oslo. The association “receives the peace prize for its efforts in favor of a world without nuclear weapons and for having demonstrated, through testimonies, that nuclear weapons must never be used again”, declared the president of the Nobel committee Norwegian, Jørgen Watne Frydnes.

“Maintain the nuclear taboo”

By awarding this prize, the Nobel committee warned against a weakening of the taboo on the use of nuclear weapons. “It is alarming to see that today this taboo is under pressure,” he stressed.

“No nuclear weapons have been used in war in almost 80 years”

“This year’s award is one that emphasizes the need to maintain the nuclear taboo. And we all have a responsibility to do it, especially the nuclear powers,” added the president of the Nobel committee.
