Train traffic interrupted between Saint-Étienne and Lyon will gradually resume

Train traffic between Saint-Etienne and Givors will gradually resume this Wednesday, October 9 from noon. This does not mean the end of traffic problems: expect to see more trains canceled or longer journey times, warns the SNCF. Since the evening before, no TER or TGV has been running, after a landslide near the tracks between Saint-Chamond and Rive-de-Gier. It was impossible for the SNCF agents, who intervened on site on Tuesday evening, to determine, while it was still raining and night had fallen, whether the waterlogged earth had stabilized or whether a new landslide could occur. New assessments carried out this Wednesday morning validate the gradual resumption of traffic.

No replacement bus this morning

No replacement bus this morning, the SNCF recommends that you do not go to the station. This Wednesday morning, the routes offered on the SNCF application to connect Saint-Etienne and pass through Coteau, in the north of the department, with a change to then leave towards the capital of Les Gones. A 2.5 hour journey instead of the usual 45 minutes.

A situation that repeats itself

It was the firefighters who reported at the end of the day this Tuesday, October 9, a suspected landslide near the railway line at Rive-de-Gier. It has rained a lot in the last few hours in the department, the land is waterlogged and can gully in places. The SNCF management, as a precautionary measure, therefore stopped train traffic between Rive-de-Gier and Saint-Chamond while it sent a team to the site to analyze the situation.

The Gier valley is a particularly sensitive area in the event of heavy rain. Three years ago, train traffic was interrupted for several weeks following a landslide caused by the flood of the Gier.
