Rugby union – Jérôme Bosviel, before his 200th match: “Only good memories in Montauban”

Jérôme Bosviel before talking about your 200^e championship match in “green and black” do you have any significant memories of all the matches you played?

One thing I remember well is that I lost my 100^e in Sapiac and my 150^e match at Jean-Alric against Aurillac. If we can make sure that for my 200^e otherwise it would be rather good for the team. For me the adage “never two without three” does not exist.

Play a 200^e championship match does it have a special taste?

I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t special. 200 matches is a large number where few players arrive. I’ve been here since 2016. I think about it because everyone talks to me about it. I try as much as possible to get out of my personal situation because it is the team that takes precedence. It is only the result, the victory that will impact our journey in the championship.

You know Aurillac well, do you think we should take them very seriously, even if this season they haven’t won away yet?

This is the first match of the second championship block. It’s the ultimate trap match. Aurillac is a playful and very strong team with Tedo Abzhandadze, a veteran of ours, at the opening. He is a very good player and he will want to show it. It’s a team that will come without pressure. We will have to hold the ball, our game will be in place and we will put Aurillac under our pressure.

Would you have preferred to continue after Nevers?

We had a week’s vacation. After Nevers I would have liked to switch to the arrival of Aurillac. Now we have to be realistic, we haven’t had a break since the start of the season and we are going to continue with a block of six matches. The vacation week was therefore well placed. To say that it will have been beneficial, we will have to beat Aurillac.

What is the motto this week?

Not to see yourself as too beautiful. We just won in Nevers to finish the first block well. You must not think you have arrived. We have to continue to take the matches one after the other. Today we only think about receiving Aurillac.

Is this the result of experience?

Last year we were sixth in January before everything stopped. It’s up to us elders to keep our feet on the ground. We will know much more at the end of this second block after eleven championship matches.

Your opinion on the new Sapiac?

That suits me. The game is smoother and faster. There is the pitch but also the supporters who are much closer to the pitch. We have to take advantage of everything to play good matches and win them.

Does the new time rule on transformation attempts bother you?

Personally no, because I follow players who don’t need concentration time. It’s the way of scoring that suits me. I tried a lot of things before getting to this point. I know that I was refused a conversion for running out of time against Montois. I just need the try scorers not to waste too much time giving me the ball. I try the drops by feeling when I feel that I need to rest the fronts. I don’t hope to have to try it against Aurillac.

After 200 matches what can you still improve?

Certainly in the management of strong and weak times. Sometimes I just want to play too much.

What are your best memories in Montauban?

On a family level, I have two daughters who were born in Montauban. Montauban will forever remain in my memory. In rugby, there are the two semi-finals in 2017 and 2018 in Montauban, and a final in Bordeaux. Then the supports torn off on the last day. However, I prefer to play final phases.

Can you play for much longer?

By sharing time with an excellent player like Thomas Fortunel. If we continue to share playing time that suits me. I could last several years (laughs).

Are you much younger than Lilo, Mariner or Byrnes who are still playing?

These are the big names in rugby who have left their mark on Montauban. We can clearly see that USM is a special club because many stay there.

A word about the Montbeton-Lacourt club which is just starting out?

I am a speaker with Maxime Mathy. Unfortunately, they lost the first two games. It brings us back to earth seeing players who work all day and come to train in the evening. I have a great life living my passion.
