Restoration work on the Trevi Fountain in Rome has begun. HAS Rome the work began the day before yesterday with a major extraordinary maintenance operation of the Trevi fountainsupervised by the Capitol Superintendent and promoted by theCultural Department of Roma Capitale. The intervention, in the lower part of the fountain, is necessary due to the deterioration which affects the famous monument, located in a area with high pedestrian traffic and subject to particular microclimatic conditions. These factors favor the formation of biological patina, weed vegetation and limestone deposits, particularly in areas exposed to continuous contact with water.
The maintenance of the Trevi Fountain is part of a larger program of measures planned by the PNRR – Caput Mundi, which also covers other historical monuments such as the Quirinal, Barcaccia, Tartarughe and Tiare fountains. . The total value of the project amounts to 1.187 million euros.
Despite the work, the monument will remain visible thanks to the installation of a low impact and transparent fence. In addition, within a month, a gateway will be set up to allow visitors to walk on the water of the fountain and observe the monument from a new and up-close point of view. This new way of visiting it is sera accessible only to limited groups and will be useful, according to the Municipality of Rome, to collect data on attendance, which is essential to resolve overcrowding problems.
The work will mainly focus on the stone surfaces of the lower part of the monument, with particular attention to the area between the edge of the swimming pool and the access steps, which will be thoroughly cleaned. The seals of different parts of the fountain will also be repaired to ensure its structural and aesthetic preservation. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

“We are aware that this is an intervention that affects one of the most emblematic monuments in the world, but the fountain will remain visible,” said Miguel Gotormunicipal councilor responsible for culture.
Claudio Parisi Presiccesuperintendent of the Capitol, explained: “The work will affect the lower part of the fountain. This is a complex intervention due to the equipment to be used but also the multitude of materials present: marble, stucco, limestone, metal. The construction site will not hinder the enjoyment of the monumeto, which will remain visible thanks to a transparent fence and will be safe for workers and visitors”.
“This is an important and valuable intervention,” said Alessandro Onoratomunicipal councilor responsible for major events, sport, tourism and fashion. This will be an opportunity to experiment and analyze a new management of tourist and non-tourist flows,” he concluded.
