Todd Joseph Gallant, the man accused of murdering Byron Carr in 1988, pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning.

The 57-year-old defendant also chose a trial by judge and jury.

Todd Joseph Gallant was arrested in January and charged with first degree murder of Byron Carr whose body was found in November 1988 at his home in Charlottetown.

The man is also accused of indignity towards a corpse.

Byron Carr was a teacher at Montague Regional High School at the time of his death. After following a few leads, the police had to close the file.

In 2007, the case was reopened. Since then, Charlottetown police have been able to take advantage of scientific advances to match DNA collected from the crime scene.

The case will return to court in December to determine a date for his trial.
