This earned us a volume of Memoirs, published Tuesday in New York by an independent publisher, Skyhorse, and not, as one might have imagined, by a prestigious house. With its approximately 250 pages, the work, simply, if not modestly, titled “Melania”, is a “captivating and inspiring story, which offers a glimpse into the life of a woman who met her challenges with grace and determination”, promises the publisher in the commercial presentation of the book.

A chance encounter

Melania Trump, born Melanja Knavs and aged 54, traces her childhood in communist Slovenia, her eventful career as a model in Europe, then in New York, and her “chance meeting” with Donald Trump, which would lead her to become the only First Lady who was not born on American soil. She therefore describes both behind the scenes of the White House – without any shocking revelation and without mentioning her husband’s escapades – as well as the highlights of her private life, particularly when she became a mother.

From a woman who we know was terrified of having to take on the prominent public role that Donald Trump’s victory in 2016 meant for her, and whose investment we weren’t particularly impressed with personal in national causes, unlike Michelle Obama for example, we are therefore a priori surprised to learn that “Melania” will “highlight her commitments and the causes that are close to her heart”.

Unshakeable conviction

The surprise is even greater when we discover that Melania Trump has defended “all her life” and intends to still defend, in the name of individual freedom, the unconditional right of women to dispose of their bodies, to decide whether or not to have a child, and to terminate a pregnancy if necessary. “It is imperative that women be free to choose, according to their own beliefs, and without any government intervention or pressure,” she writes.

However, it was Donald Trump who, by appointing three conservative judges to the Supreme Court, allowed the revocation of the “Roe v. Wade” ruling which established the right to abortion on a national scale, a revocation which prompted around fifteen Republican states have tightened their legislation to the point of effectively banning abortion. This unpopular policy had a boomerang effect on the Republicans, now worried about suffering a new electoral setback in November after that of the 2022 Midterms.

By publishing her testimony a month before the election, does Melania Trump want to smooth her husband’s image by suggesting that she can encourage him to rethink his copy? Or does she want, on the contrary, to display her difference – as the First Lady ostensibly did in the past on one or another occasion. In any case, she claims to have other differences with the former President, particularly on immigration.
