Viktor Orban announces that Hungary will help refugees who want to go to Brussels

LHungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Tuesday during a press conference at the European Parliament that his country’s authorities would help people who received asylum in Hungary to reach Brussels if they wish.

A month ago, a member of the Hungarian government made similar comments, claiming that his country’s authorities would charter buses to transport asylum-seeking migrants from Hungary to the EU capital free of charge. This Tuesday, the subject was already different, since it only concerned recognized refugees.

“We will help this person”

“Of course we will respect European rules. But if someone who receives asylum in Hungary wants to go to Brussels, we will help that person,” said the populist leader, when asked about this subject.

Hungary grants very little asylum, due to a very harsh policy for which it has already been condemned several times by the Court of Justice of the European Union. According to figures from the EU Asylum Agency, in the first six months of this year, barely thirteen asylum applications were submitted in Hungary. Seven cases had a positive outcome.
