Sermoise-sur-Loire. La Sermoisienne: a page turns for the book flea market. Recently, the traditional book flea market, organized by La Sermoisienne, met with new success, like the sixteen previous editions.
The public was there, despite the climatic hazards. Several hundred books found a buyer, happy to be able to access culture for a few euros.
More than two thousand pounds
But Jean-François Jondeau explains the end of a great adventure: “During all these years, making readers happy has been the best reward for the efforts made by the members of the association. Seeing children’s eyes light up with a comic book or a book from the pink library for 50 cents, what a reward! But time inexorably does its work, and the conclusion was drawn up at the end of the event of the Sermoisienne’s inability to sustain this annual meeting. The organization and handling necessary to set up this flea market would require new, younger hands, but the crisis of volunteering and commitment is hitting the association hard. The handling, storage and conservation of more than two thousand books require work that the association is no longer able to carry out.
And to continue: “The decision was therefore made not to renew the flea market in 2025. It remains to deal with the future of the stock of more than two thousand pounds. Many of them will be distributed among the various book boxes in the Nevers metropolitan area. For the rest, it will be offered to associations or individuals who would like to recover them to continue the sale, in another form. In the future, the Sermoisienne will concentrate its forces on the organization of the artistic exhibition, which was a great success in spring 2024.”
The second Spring of Arts in Sermoise-sur-Loire is scheduled for March 22 and 23. Registrations are already open. There are still a few panels to rent.
