The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.

Thomas Perlmann, secretary of the Nobel Assembly, announced the prize on Monday in Stockholm.

The Nobel Prizes were created by Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1896. It comes with a cash prize of 11 million Swedish crowns, or almost 976,000 euros.

From 1901 to 2023, 114 Nobel Prizes were awarded.

The medicine prize oflast year was awarded to Hungarian-American biochemist Katalin Karikó and American immunologist Drew Weissman for their work on the mRNA technology behind Covid-19 vaccines.

The other 2024 Nobel Prizes, in physics, chemistry, economics, literature and for peace, will be announced throughout the week.

Nobel laureates will receive their prizes at a ceremony in Sweden in December.
