It is always difficult to make the right choice between the different possibilities available to us regarding beauty products. This is the case in terms of hygiene, the choice is wide in terms of shower products.

Bar soap, shower gel… How to choose the most suitable hygiene product according to our needs? For this, dermatologists gave their opinion on the best hygiene product to use.

Textures and smells vary depending on consumer preferences in the shower. But, the best way to choose your body routine is to choose the cleansing product that best suits your skin’s needs.

Bar soap or shower gel?

To choose the ideal cleansing product for your skin, nothing could be simpler. Your skin is dry, tight, rough or itchy ? You must use a shower gel. Indeed, shower gels tend to be more hydrating and more soothing. Shower gels may contain formulas suitable for people suffering from skin problems such as eczema or acne. “Many body washes these days are formulated to be as gentle as your skin needs”explains Gabrielle Nekrasas, cosmetic chemist and founder and CEO of Nanuvo Labs.

On the other hand, if your skin is sensitive or easily irritatedit would be more suitable for your skin to use a bar of soap. According to Dr. Hayley Goldbach, dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon, bar soaps generally do not contain no potentially irritating ingredientswhich reduces the risk of allergy.

Ingredients to look for and avoid in your cleaning product

Almost all skin types can benefit from shower gels and bar soaps containing ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, and oils like avocado, argan, and coconut. These ingredients help retain moisture, allowing you to clean your skin without disrupting its barrier function. No matter which cleanser you decide to use, if you have sensitive skin, avoid scented formulas. “Companies are not required to disclose the chemicals they use for this purpose, which can trigger an allergy or reaction”then affirmed Doctor Goldbach. Another ingredient to avoid is triclosan, an antimicrobial that is irritating and can pose health risks. The dermatologist adds that you should also avoid products containing powerful antibacterials.

According to dermatologists, there are cases where bar soap is better than shower gel, and vice versa. For example, if you have very sensitive skin, a bar of soap may be the best option, as it is often made with fewer ingredients and is usually free of irritating substances. If you’re looking for a more targeted formula (for dryness or exfoliation, for example), you can opt for a shower gelbecause many contain tailor-made active ingredients. With all this information, it is now up to you to make the choice that suits you best!
