WTA > Leylah Fernandez (35th): “When I was young, many coaches told me that my technique was bad, that I was too small and that I had neither the power nor the speed”

Known for her incredible run at the 2021 US Open where she reached the final before losing to Emma Raducanu during an improbable edition, Leylah Fernandez (21 years old, 35e world) recently gave an interview to our Spanish colleagues from PuntodeBreak in which she spoke about her journey which was not easy before she hatched.

“When I was young, a lot of people told me that I hit the ball well, but that I didn’t have the physique to play against the other girls. They told me my technique was bad, I was too small and I didn’t have the power or speed. Many coaches used me more as a sparring partner than as a player with potential. It was only when I started winning matches, as well as national and international tournaments, that they helped me a little more. But before all that I only had the support of my family, that’s why I always tell myself how lucky I am to have them by my side. »
