It’s time to close this live

Thank you for following this ceremony, and this festival, with us. See you soon for the review of this edition.

The Palme passing generations

Note that it was George Lucas who presented the Palme to a representative of the new independent American cinema. Quite a symbol. Sean Baker is a lover of marginalized characters, brimming with humanity, and often works with beginner or amateur actors.

Subverting the myths of Cinderella or Pretty Woman, Anora moves from the slums of New York to the luxury villas of Russian oligarchs, following the relationship between a young stripper Anora and the son of a billionaire.

The plea for the big screen

I missed this rant from Sean Baker in his speech. “I know that I will continue to fight for cinema. We have to fight to make films that come out in theaters. The world needs to remember that watching a film on your cell phone or at home is not the way to watch films,” insisted the 53-year-old American.

We await the jury’s justifications

The ceremony ended quickly. The jury will now explain its choices at a press conference. The special award to Mohammad Rasoulof seems very light considering the strength of his film and the political impact that a Palme d’Or would have had. Conversely, the likeable Anora does not, according to several observers, have the scale of a Palme d’Or. In short, Greta Gerwig will be on the grill of questions…

A prepared but touching speech

Sean Baker had written his speech “even though I didn’t know what to expect.” He looks frankly surprised and happy. We are very happy for him.

A comedy “that broke our hearts”

Greta Gerwig thus announced the choice of her jury.

The Palme d’Or goes to “Anora”

Since the team of Anora climbed the Steps this evening and has not yet been rewarded, it is a safe bet that Sean Baker will leave with the Grail…

Francis Ford Coppola brings the Palm of Honor to his friend

As expected. The old friends (60 years of friendship, says Coppola) hug. 165 years between them anyway, and quite a few legendary films.

Applause trilogies

It’s as long as a Sarlacc intestine…

George Lucas will receive his Palm of Honor (and Chewbacca still doesn’t have a medal)

We’re going to have a speech. But since the director is not a great speaker, it shouldn’t be too long…

The Grand Prize for “All We Imagine As Light”

Indian director Payal Kapadia doesn’t seem to believe it (it’s a surprise for a lot of people, in fact…)

Viola Davis is on stage

And it’s really classy. “Cinema is not a safe place… » The American actress and activist explains that cinema is a place of saving restlessness.

Only two prizes left to give away

The Grand Prix then the Palme d’Or. Unless the jury has a surprise in store for us…

Jury Prize for “Emilia Perez”

Another prize for Jacques Audiard… His film has already been rewarded this evening with the female actor prize for its female cast.

The jury prize awarded by a Quebecer

Xavier Dolan began his speech with a “Hello” which really lightened the atmosphere.

The award for directing for Miguel Gomes

“I’m finally lucky”… The Portuguese director of Grand Tour doesn’t seem very happy though, he even looks a little angry. He invites his entire team on stage “even if it’s forbidden”.

The rest of the list is very open

Mohammad Rasoulov was the overwhelming favorite for the Palme d’Or. With this special prize, the rest of the list is a great mystery.

“People are suffering in many places around the world”

The Iranian director pays tribute to his team and his people “taken hostage by the regime of the Islamic Republic”.

Special jury prize for Mohammad Rasoulof

The international situation clearly governs this “very” special prize from the jury, one would be tempted to say. We expected the Palme d’Or for the same reasons but the jury preferred to honor the Iranian director, who fled his country where he is being pursued, with this prize.
