The United States has delivered the first batch of the Harpoon anti-ship missile system to Taiwan.

Here’s what we know

The delivery is part of a $2.22 billion deal struck in 2020 by the United States to supply Taiwan with up to 100 Harpoon coastal defense systems and related equipment.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry also allocated an additional $469 million for the construction of related facilities.

The package includes 411 containers, 100 Harpoon coastal defense system vehicles, spare and repair parts, as well as logistical support such as training and training equipment, and technical assistance from the U.S. government and contractors.

The first phase of delivery is expected to be completed by 2026 and will be integrated into Taiwan’s new Coastal Combat Command, scheduled to be established in the same year.

The second and final phase is expected to be completed by 2028.

Taipei plans to use the US Harpoon missile system as well as its own Hsiung Feng missiles to bolster its maritime defense capabilities against the threat of a possible Chinese invasion.
