On December 14, 2023, we could read in L’Acadie nouvelle that the Progressive Conservative government of New Brunswick is banking heavily on nuclear power for carbon neutrality.

Blaine Higgs presented his plan and affirmed that it met federal carbon neutrality objectives by relying in part on nuclear power.

In 2023, the Conservative government said no to the Atlantic loop. This green energy megaproject aims to decarbonize the networks of the eastern provinces of the country. The loop would aim to facilitate the transport of electricity between the Maritime Provinces.

In a recent report published by NB Power, it was written that the project would increase costs for electricity consumers by $270 to $310 million per year starting in the 2040s.

According to experts, this report is incomplete, technical studies show that it is worth it and that NB Power offers no clear alternative solution to achieve decarbonization objectives.

Ms. Holt, what is your plan for NB Power? Do you think New Brunswickers want nuclear power in their backyard? If not, what are the alternatives?

The Liberal Party and the Green Party must offer the population a plan and real figures before the provincial election. Don’t make the same mistake as the Progressive Conservative government by not publishing an estimate of the costs of their energy plan.
