The young retiree rarely misses a poultry exhibition and knows almost all feathered species. But one day, he was surprised by a friend. “He introduced me to the chickens of Marans, a species native to Vendée, of which I was unaware of the existence and its quality as an egg-layer. Eggs with a taste quality that stands out from the rest

“Like all chickens in the countryside, they eat wheat, insects, grass. A bit of everything in short. However, their chocolate-colored eggs have an unusual taste quality. In addition, they do not give cholesterol. You can eat it as much as you want. Only positive things for health,” explains Joël. Be careful though, because a nice omelette could cost you a pretty penny.

15 euros per dozen eggs

“In Paris, a dozen eggs sell for 15 euros. Same price on the Bagnoles-sur-Orne market, not far from us,” says Joël. The latter could fill his bank account by selling the eggs of his beautiful hens, “but that’s not what I’m looking for. I sell them mainly for reproduction in order to save the species, that’s what fascinates me above all.”

Cameras to protect your chickens and pigeons

“If eggs sell at a tempting price, what is the value of a Marans hen? » , you would say. 40 euros each!

“Can we enjoy a good Marans hen, especially at this price? » We dared to ask this question to Joël who does not like to eat the animals that he raises himself with passion. “It’s edible, but it’s not broiler chicken. Let’s say it cooks like coq au vin or an old hen.”

I’ll give you something that’s valid for all poultry: those with yellow legs lay all year round and those with white legs don’t lay in winter,” says the vice-president of the national poultry association.

For several weeks, Joël has been enjoying himself and his loved ones. He is regularly in his very large garden to watch over his chickens and the eggs of incomparable flavor. He installed cameras throughout his property to protect himself from intruders.
