No gatherings in the streets of Albi on Sunday. The prefect of Tarn issued an order banning demonstrations, following the announcement by a small far-right group of a gathering in tribute to Matisse, the teenager killed on April 27 in Châteauroux, and the announcement by the local FSU of a counter-demonstration.
“The undeclared gathering organized by the entity Patria Albiges “in homage to Matisse” killed on April 27, 2024, as well as the counter-demonstration “against far-right ideas” declared by the Unitary Trade Union Federation 81, are prohibited Sunday May 5 in the town of Albi,” decided the prefecture, in a decree visible on Saturday on its website.
On its Instagram account, the small identity group Patria Albiges called for a “rally for Matisse” on Sunday at 3:00 p.m., likely to “create a high risk of disturbances to public order”, according to the prefecture.
The collective has particularly stood out in recent weeks through expressions in public spaces targeting foreigners or people of foreign origin, recalled the prefecture which also underlines that in March 2023, clashes took place between members of Patria Albiges and members of the ultra-left in Albi.
In view of the demonstration announced by the FSU, “there are serious reasons to fear the occurrence” of new clashes of the same type, according to the prefect.
In Châteauroux, a white march in tribute to young Matisse, 15, killed by a teenager of the same age on April 27, takes place Saturday afternoon in the center of the city, at the call of the family who refuses any recovery policy.
