Journalist Cheikh Yérim Seck was placed in police custody on Tuesday, following accusations of defamation and dissemination of false information. This measure comes after a summons from the Special Cybercrime Division, which had been notified to him earlier in the day. The journalist was to appear at 3 p.m., according to information shared by his colleague, Madiambal Diagne.
The exact reasons for this legal procedure remain unclear for the moment. However, authorities have opened an investigation to closely examine the accusations against him. Cheikh Yérim Seck is accused of having disseminated controversial information during his recent media appearances. He was in fact very present on different platforms, where he frequently addressed the new Senegalese authorities, sometimes making statements described as revelations, based according to him on his own investigations.
Despite the importance of the case, the precise elements on which these proceedings are based, in particular the accusations of defamation and false news, have not yet been clearly revealed.
